Friday, February 29 at East West Crossings Tea Shop

With an extra day to savor this leap year, seven Slow Food members found time to discuss the cuisines of Mexico and Thailand over musky Darjeeling and sweet Black Peach tea at East West Crossings. Unfortunately, the unwelcome snow outside prevented other members from joining in the afternoon tea.
The tea shop is a good find, after some searching, perched on the edge of the stream behind the route 322 bypass and route 26, East College Avenue. The extensive tea menu listed oolong, green, rooibos, and black teas that lined the back wall in gleaming tin canisters, like a candy shop for the tea enthusiast. Members agreed to plan another meeting at East West Crossing with a special program about tea varieties. Megan and Lynn Schlow educated the group about Mexican cuisine, the real slow food. It left us longing to taste corn smut, Huitlacoche, a fungus that affects cornfields in the summer drought and is often referred to as “Mexican truffle.”
In addition to cooking tips and good finds, other more official matters were discussed. Our first regional conference is planned for May and convivia from Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, York and Cleveland among others will be in attendance. Slow Foods leader, Erika Lesser, come in to inform and excite us about the national conference in San Francisco scheduled for August. Also, tentative meetings for the next six months were brought up:
Monday, March 24 5 to 7 p.m. Ham Pot Pie Dinner at Bald Eagle Valley Community Church
Saturday, April 26 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wild Foods Walk and Foraged Lunch Salad with Deb Fisher at Julian Woods Community
Saturday, May 24 9 to 10 a.m. Gemelli Bakery Tour and Coffee at the Cheese Shoppe
June, date TBA Tamarack Farm Tour in Spring Mills
July, date TBA Triple C Bison Farm Tour near Clarion, PA
August Local Foods Week, Slow Food Nation in San Francisco

It wasn’t long before we diverted from the official matters once again. Who can blame us? With a diverse group of food enthusiasts possessing a wealth of gastronomic experience and a cup of piping hot Darjeeling Jungpana, what better way to spend our extra day in 2008?

Members and friends in attendance:
